Presentation

  1. Hi Yash!

I really enjoyed your presentation and many aspects of it today. Presenting while sick is truly admirable. I really connected with the statement that you made regarding Sethe's journey, and how the struggle to gain freedom seems more valuable than attaining freedom itself. This ironic sense of contentment from a lack of fulfillment is something that I experience during my "own" epic journey, and seems to be a sentiment shared by the authors in your pieces, both of whom are African-Americans. I also like the way you addressed point of view in more detail, as the speaker really determines what the author takes away and knows regarding a topic. The varying points of view and their effects on the work were made clear to me.
    Excellent work!

  2. Hi, Yash!
I loved that you picked a novel that took place in our own backyard. That was a cool connection. Though slavery is not still in place today, you did a good job connecting the themes to modern America. I liked the way you looked closely at the point of view and how that affected the way the story was told. This is truly an epic journey, or bildungroman, and you did a great job capturing it within your analysis, especially looking at each step of her journey. Great job!

  3. Right off the bat, I noticed your use of the dark red color theme. I think this does a good job of symbolizing the anger, longing, and wrath that is associated with slavery and its erosion on the human soul, as you so eloquently said in your poetry thesis. Then I moved on to your open question thesis and saw that the red resembled Beloved, and this whole idea between Beloved and Sethe and their unification goes well with the prompt you selected. I also liked how you effectively linked Morrison's background as a black woman, non-feminist, impressionist writer and the works she wrote. Overall, a good powerpoint!

  4. Hi Yash!

I was really impressed by your presentation. Your choices in construction of your slide show was well thought out.

I understood from your presentation that Toni Morrison was trying to argue in beloved that elongated intense ordeals, such as slavery, can slowly ship away at your soul. Your research was really well done, as I think it was both intriguing and important to mention that while Morrison was a civil rights activist, she was not a feminist, thus making her a polarizing author.

I find great similarities in theme between this book and Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. While Oedipus Rex does not necessarily involve slavery, it does involve the main character, Oedipus, going through the tough ordeal of investigation and realization, which eventually tears his soul, and he eventually begs for "self-alienation", as you described in your Open Question thesis.

While this doesn't seem like a book for me, I really look forward to using some of your analysis process to help me get a 5 on the AP test!

  5. Congratulations on completing your AP Literature and Composition final exam presentation! One of the unique features I noticed about your presentation was the detail in which you spoke about your novel. Although you did run out of time, I discovered a greater sense of context in your novel which allowed me to appreciate your analysis more. I think you also did a great job formulating your open essay thesis based off the prompt and the mother, Sethe. This led to a very clear thesis that ultimately, I assume, proved to be a strong paper. Lastly, thanks for mentioning my 'loading' joke about the passages. Any presentation can benefit from humor, and my humor was no exception clearly. In all seriousness, I thought your overall presentation was well done. Sensational job!

  6. Hey Yash!
Your presentation was outstanding! I liked how (whether or not it was intentional) that you picked an author from Ohio. I liked how the color scheme of the presentation reflected the anger, and as you put it, to exemplify slavery’s erosion on the human soul. Your analysis of the symbolism behind the color red was in depth and it showed how well you really knew your book. Even though you ran out of time, I felt that I understood the deeper meaning of the novel and where the complexity lies within it. Overall, you did a great job!

  7. Hi Yash! Your presentation was great, and I liked especially how much detail you went through to explain the story-line of the book, and how that played into your selection of an open question prompt. I think that a lot of us had great analysis, but were unable to give the class a detailed overview of our books, and a lot of times that made the presentation less interesting, but that didn't happen with yours presentation. The mention of the road of trials and how the poem you chose applied to that part of the hero’s journey in Beloved was interesting, and I never thought to specifically apply my poem in that way to my book. The book seems cool, and it takes place in Cincinnati right? I might read it sometime.
